Guide to Sustainable Alaska Cruises

Sustainable Alaska Cruises

I am dedicated to helping travelers find the most sustainable options for their next adventures. While the cruise industry is not known for sustainability, some ocean cruise lines have made an effort to clean up their acts. Thanks to the people over at Friends of the Earth, I now have a resource to check how earth friendly a cruise is. Additionally, small ship cruises are generally greener than traditional cruises. Fortunately, travelers can find more earth friendly cruises to Alaska than to some other destinations.

Un-Cruise Adventures

Un-Cruise Adventures is my number one pick for green cruising to Alaska. First, its fleet consists of small ships that really connect you with nature. Second, Un-Cruise Adventures takes responsible travel seriously. For example, the cruise line has replaced its ship engines for more efficient models. It also recycles at every port. While Friends of the Earth hasn’t rated Un-Cruise Adventures, I believe Un-Cruise is one of the best sustainable Alaska cruise options out there.

You may pay more to take a cruise with Un-Cruise Adventures, but I believe you’ll also get more from your experience.

Princess Cruises

While Princess Cruises gets an overall grade of C from the 2016 Cruise Ship Report Card, Princess has upgraded its ships that sail to Alaska. In fact, Princess Cruises has three of the highest rated ships to Alaska, which are the Coral Princess, Sun Princess, and Golden Princess.

Friends of the Earth Ratings for Coral Princess

  • Sewage Treatment: A
  • Air Pollution Reduction: A-
  • Water Quality Compliance: A
  • Overall Ship Rating: A

Friends of the Earth Ratings for Sun Princess

  • Sewage Treatment: A
  • Air Pollution Reduction: A-
  • Water Quality Compliance: N/A
  • Overall Ship Rating: A

Friends of the Earth Ratings for Golden Princess

  • Sewage Treatment: A
  • Air Pollution Reduction: A
  • Water Quality Compliance: A
  • Overall Ship Rating: A

Princess Cruises offers the best traditional ocean cruises to Alaska in my opinion. Its itineraries give you more time to see the glaciers, and Princess Cruises owns its own properties on the main land. So, it can offer some of the best shore trips to add to your cruise.

Disney Cruise Line

Believe it or not, Disney Cruise Line is the top rated cruise line for sustainability from Friends of the Earth in 2016. Disney takes sustainability seriously, and made upgrades to its entire cruise line to make sailing with them greener. One of its ships, the Disney Wonder, also gets top marks for cruise ships that sail to Alaska.

While Disney Cruise Line is great for families, don’t forget every cruise also offers something just for adults too! Disney Cruise Line offers probably the best service in the industry.

Norwegian Cruise Line

The Norwegian Jewel from Norwegian Cruise Lines also tops the list with A ratings across the board. Norwegian Cruise Line offers some of the best cruises to Alaska.
